Because history cannot exist in the absence of a statue and when you take down a statue, you not only erase any evidence of that event happening or any way to find out about it, you go back in time and rip it out of history, destroying the space time continuum. That's what people must mean when they say moving a hastily made confederate statue put up in the 60s by white supremacists to a museum is "erasing history".
