I don't really support the removal of the monuments. I feel like America needs the grit of having old scars like these monuments as a reminder to our dark history so we understand how far we've come. I think there's a certain level of reality that might hit somebody when they see a confederate monument in person at a public square that would really get them to think about the gravity of how far we've come.

You look at the representation of that dark part of history, and you're confronted with it. I think that's better than a statue being moved to a Museum since it's inherently more invasive, keeping the concept of that part of our history more pronounced in the psyche of the public. Not to make people feel guilty, just for people to get a feel for our very troubled history.

My two cents, anyway. It's not going to destroy society or make us forget if we remove the monuments and I get why people are offended, but I don't agree with their removal. I think reminding people of history is an important thing.


I think the invasive nature of it being in the public square is meaningful here rather than the optional nature of a museum
