There are friends and there are friends... I mean people you know due to shared relationships or close geographical proximity can form strong bonds with you, but it's not the same as people you're just meant to care about beyond those factors.

Most of my friends in school didn't have a lot of overlapping interests with me, more so as we all got older. The people I was closer to post-graduation were almost all different than who I mixed with prior. Many I knew before, but never got to know as well until later, when they replaced my old friends. The ones I considered my best buddies growing up trades places with acquaintances or entirely new friends (to a lesser extent).

I kind of get what you're saying. I always felt like an outsider in every group, and only have three friends that I'd consider "lifers."
