Because if they are gone, they can start forgetting why they existed in the first place, whitewashing history into a happier place.
Putting them up in the first place was done in order to whitewash the reasons for the civil war and attribute the conflict to reasons that weren't true at the time but merely made up after the fact. And they were also put up as a symbol of racial intimidation in order to remind the now freed slaves of their place in the post-civil war south while others were erected during the height of the Civil Rights movement for the very same reason. But you already know this cause you've been told it in previous topics. So you're either you're trolling or merely consider paint chips a delicacy.
And as I said in the other topic, which you know, is that they want to whitewash the fact that they tried to whitewash history. Starting to censor parts of your history that you dislike will just start a snowball effect where more and more gets censored. So what will the next step be? Forgetting that we had Founding Fathers that had slaves, that lived on slaves and had no intention to give them freedom? That we had civil rights movements less than a lifetime ago? That we had a highranked Nazi helping us win the space race?
Slippery slope is a fallacy for a reason and maintaining statues that were only erected as a means of racial intimidation is also downright idiotic. Our society no longer believes in the merits of enabling a silent minority that means to oppress black people from the shadows and I don't understand why you'd argue in favor of that. ---
