I guess maybe it doesn't work at all now. at first it was just "MSE won't get any more updates", ok. but it sure seems like it doesn't work at all now. what I would do is, make sure you have ALL windows updates, and don't run as an administrative user. it's a lot more of a pain to run as a limited user in XP than in Vista+ due to not having UAC, but it's a LOT safer than running as an admin. make some admin account that you can use to install and configure things (with "run as", never login as that user, and be careful what you do with processes that are running administratively), and be very cautious about what you install.
