I never understand that thinking. Following a group's policies, doctrines, traditions, whatever is kind of the whole point of being in that group in the first place. They are advocating an ideology, a way of living your life. If you refuse to follow it, that's perfectly fine to me, but then it makes no sense to say you are a member of that group. Granted, you might fail in upholding that ideology (as humans are known to do), but the group is supposed to push (or pull) you into finding your way back onto the "right" path. Calling them assholes for doing that makes it seem like you don't understand what that group even stands for.
