A lot of old games were designed to be unplayable without a guide, though I can't remember if Chrono Trigger falls under that. I remember using a guide for the side quests, because fuck em, I can't remember if I used one for the main plot at all.

The games were short so they expected you to try a bit, but all the hints for everything were there. Since guides were not widely available (aside in paper forms, and for kids they were expensive), we just made due. Talked to people in real life, bang our heads a bit, and figured it out.

The only thing that wasn't that obvious was the green dream quest, and even that was a lot of "wink wink hint hint".

Thats the biggest thing: nothing in those games was that no space was wasted. If there's something, its used for something. If someone says something, its about a quest. Made things a lot easier.
