Going way back to my first day on call, very shortly after I started at this job. My very first after hours call is a hospice nurse in my delivery area asking to order a home hospital bed for a new admit. He has already been discharged from the hospital and is at home, but the family already dismantled his personal bed and hauled it away, to make room for the hospital bed. I explain to the nurse that I'm en route to another delivery (We frequently work well past the time the office closes, finishing up orders) that's an hour away, will take me about an hour to set up, and then once I get back I'll have to go to our warehouse to load up a bed for the delivery. After it's all said and done, I wouldn't be able to deliver this bed until after 10 or 11pm. The nurse starts freaking out, saying this patient is uncomfortable slumped over in a chair and can't wait that long. I apologized, and politely suggested that home DME should be ordered before a patient discharges and is sitting at home without the equipment he needs. The nurse huffed and hung up before I could get the patient's name and address, and I never got another call about it again.

Other wonders are equipment coming unplugged from the wall, the nurse calls and says it's "broken," I ask them to check the plug and they get offended, ask if I think they're stupid, etc. I frequently have to explain to them that I cannot send a driver out after hours before attempting to troubleshoot over the phone. Sometimes they actually check and are all "Oh, it was the plug, sorry!" Sometimes they outright lie and say they checked, but when I or the appropriate driver gets to them, we find the equipment unplugged from the wall after all.

These are the people taking care of your sick and elderly. Most of them are great, and I love good nurses, but some of them make you wonder how they make it day to day without wandering out into traffic...nevermind how the hell they graduated nursing school.
