That is not how this works.
Except that is how it works. Why should the majority (ex. those that believe in God) have to explain themselves to the minority? (ex. the atheists) considering believing in God is the de facto stance.
Because it's quite impossible to prove that something doesn't exist, as you can't cite evidence that isn't there, but if something does exist, it should be possible to prove. Burden of proof lies in theists' hands regardless of how many more of them there are than atheists.
