I don't get why things like that needs to be announced in this day and age. Just do it and play it out like it would be a normal thing and not a gimmick.
They treat it like a gimmick, because they want to use this as a way of advertising the show and to boost the ratings.

Once again my only problem with this is why advertise it? If you want to normalize homosexuals in TV show don't make a big deal about it.

If you did you would know that the creator was asked by fans if any gay storylines would be featured, to which he responded that, yes, there will be one. What's he supposed to do? Ignore the fans?
He could have just kept it as a surprise. If I asked him for the future storylines would he reveal them? ---
