Proto Man probably spontaneously died because of an "energy defect," Mega Man got captured by Dr. Wily and reprogrammed to fight his past self to the death, and Bass maaaaaaaybe tried to pick a fight with Zero but there are a lot of questions left open with that one. Light and Wily got old and died, but not before turning themselves into a hologram and a robot (named Isoc), respectively.
