How much did the average soldier know about the concentration camps anyway?

True I don't think anyone knew much until the very end.

Plenty of newspapers wrote about the Nazi concentration camps, even before the war. In 1933-34 they were seen as a kind of tough boot camp; by 1938 (especially after the wave of arrests in the wake of Kristallnacht) they gained a reputation in the Western democracies for brutality. But their real horror wasn't known until they were liberated in 1945.
