Courtrooms have been traditionally open to the public. The general feeling is that you don't want the government passing judgment behind closed doors and having people being taken advantage of. Both civil and criminal proceedings (including jury selection) are usually open to the public, though there is a stronger reason for having a public criminal trial. Still, there are some civil cases where judges opt to close the courtroom for good reasons, like custody hearings and divorce.
