I have a cousin who was honorably discharged from the army after being permanently disabled while on duty. He was offered the choice of a monthly check for the rest of his life or one large payout.

His wife pushed him for the one payout, but my father talked him out of it. He reasoned with my cousin that at least with the monthly check he would have something to fall back on in an emergency. My aunt was less tactful. She had never trusted her daughter in law and told her son that his wife probably planned to leave him after she clears out their shared bank account. After all, the wife had already proved her duplicity by cheating on her son earlier.

When my cousin's wife found out my cousin was taking my father's advice, she cursed both my parents out. Two months later, my aunt's prediction came to pass. His wife disappeared, leaving my cousin penniless.

Christ, what a twist at the end, I thought that your cousin would've taken your dad and aunt's advice.
