imo the main issue was that most of the party's superdelegates had issued endorsements before the primaries actually started

so there was an air of inevitability for clinton which would suppress turnout for sanders

best if SDs hold off until primary finishes. or eliminate them altogether--they're an undemocratic relic that does not belong in a party primary in a proper representative democracy
