Granted, the guy on TV was actually not innocent, but Light didn't know that. Light thought it was the detective L, a man who was helping to bring justice to the world, and Light wanted to fucking murder him. He was trying to remove justice from the world, by capturing Kira. That's literally the opposite of bringing justice That man wasn't a threat to him. He killed him to prove a point. That's beyond selfish.
