It seems perfectly acceptable to me to assign sex based on anatomical and/or genetic features and then to assign the opposite as transgender should that be discovered later in life. After all, the traditional way of doing it will still be right most of the time. Of course, eventually, we may be able to understand more exactly what's happening in the brains of transgenders.
