How well would California be doing if it didn't have the tech industry? How well would state X be doing without natural resource Y? Why is the tech industry there if it's so bad for business? Is it the state economic policy? Is it their social policies? Weather? A conspiracy to make red staters look stupid? Maybe how well they're doing is just "fake news"? Maybe it's the food trucks man.
