Dr. Foster accidentally uncovered it when she walked through a portal created by the planet alignment stuff in Thor 2. The Power Stone was locked away after those dudes in the background explanation tried to use it together. Starlord was hired to retrieve it by the Collector. Thanos presumably had the Mind Stone and gave it to Loki to use so he could invade Earth in an attempt to get the Tesseract. The Ancient One's sect had the Time Stone.
