Depends what you mean by "broke away". Canada is still a member of the British Commonwealth and the Queen is our head-of-state, so in that sense we've never "broken away" from the UK the way the US did. The event you're referring to was the patriation of the Canadian Constitution from Britain to Canada and it occurred in 1982, but we were a sovereign country a long time before that.
