The residential school program was meant to convert Aboriginal populations to Christianity, and kill off all remnants of their religions, customs, and cultures. It was forceful assimilation paid for and carried out by the government and supported by churches. If that's well-intentioned, well... that may be some white privilege talking I seriously doubt the original program was penned as an evil act.
