Like if you take a look at the sort of things the left wants, you see that it works best in a post-scarcity society. To get that, you need automation and renewable energy sources to advance significantly so the cost of living becomes fairly insignificant. I think it's because they see it as an excuse to justify expansion of a welfare state. There is no other good reason.
