What is even the point of owning a new home these days? And I mean one of these cookie cutter army camp looking pos things in manufactured "neighborhoods". I inherited my childhood home so I'm a different story. But growing up in the 80s-90s every single friend and family member had a home. Every home had a yard, front and back. A normal home. Everyone was different, some had a pool and yard, some just a huge yard, some had fruit trees, etc. A yard, a real yard was always a part of a home. And becoming an adult owning a home, the desire to have a home was that you had the yard. You could do what you wanted with it. Add things, remove things whatever you wanted. Raise kids with a treehouse and dogs like me and my brothers had, like my parents had, like their parents had.

Today in SoCal, all these tract homes are horrid. They sell for 300-500k, they're all poorly made and they have no yards. They cram 4 of these homes on the same amount of property mine is on. They're glorified apartments. There's no yard. You could literally stand at the back door and spit and hit the back perimeter fence. What the hell do people buy these things for. Not to mention the nazi-esq HOA they're all apart of so you have absolutely zero ability to make your house yours. It's madness.
