Topic	19 years later, the story of Xenogears disc 2 is solved

We definitely got the better scenario here. A ton goes down in the plot on Disc 2. It's rushed desperately but you're shipped to various dungeons you do gain full world map control again by the end. There are several big scenes which lack the appropriate punch because the narration segments had to gloss over detail, or because there's a surrealist start background as we zoom in something in media res, but we get the whole story and we still get the big picture along the way.
