Spartans are secretly abducted by the government at the age of 6 and replaced with a clone, although the cloning process at the time wasn't safe for the clone. The cloned child given back to the family would quickly become ill, and die of an unknown cause which looked similar to cancer IIRC. Afterward the real child was forced into military training, stripped of emotions via drugs, and, assuming the Spartan program didn't kill them (which it VERY often did), became a super soldier.
