Before Zelda, they were having almost no significant new games each year, with their biggest announcements being things like Star Fox Zero, Paper Mario Color Splash, and so much Amiibo crap Keep in mind this is because the Wii U was pretty much dropped like a hot potato so they could focus entirely on the Switch. The last couple years of that console were pretty much nothing.
