Wait... Whut??? Battle system has changed? Damn, gotta go read a review now.

The basic design is still there (sending a unit out to an enemy, going through the calculations to determine the outcome). Just that your units have a item they can carry, if it's not a weapon, they'll have a generic weapon for their class. There's a focus on terrains, where those squares give you a massive boost in avoid. But the maps are more open than Awakening. I honestly didn't mind this because it genuinely felt like you're having skirmishes with the opposing army and were leading an outright war against them. So the individual skirmishes felt meaningful. Take on this enemy force to reclaim a fort, take on this other enemy to push them back and invade the opposing country.

There are also dungeons where you can roam inside in 3rd person, if you clash with an enemy to go into the battle map which is, once again, and open map where your team of 10 units take on several enemies. So you can feasibly get to grinding your units.
