I admittedly haven't read Jane Eyre, but I feel it probably doesn't get the respect it deserves because people see it as a girly-girl kind of book.

What are you guys' favorite classics?

Robinson Crusoe, A Tale of Two Cities, Heart of Darkness (does it count?), Don Quixote

You took the words right out of my mouth.

It's marketed as a "romance" novel when it is not really one at all. Romance is a component, yes, but I would argue that it's much more about self-discovery and independence.
