I liked Crash Course's analysis of it on YouTube, the symbolism is interesting, especially with crazy attic lady.

The movie with Michael Fassbender wasn't bad, either.

I prefer contemporary novels too.

It's much more palatable because of the lack of idiosyncrasies.

Still, it's nice revisiting older books sometimes.

Name some. I can't recall any that I read in high school

Pride and Prejudice, War and Peace, Moby Dick, Count of Monte Cristo, etc.

War and Peace is really good

It's a very challenging read for sure.
