The thing is this is the model that keeps gamers playing as well as spending money.

1. Paid content such as levels and characters is the most traditional but it's a one off and it fragments the community.
2. People want to be rewarded for playing with unique stuff but they also don't want the game to be unfair when starting out. Simply buying a skin isn't a reward for playing. Lootboxes give that feeling of getting a reward because it can be earned by simply playing the game. The more stuff to collect the more unique your character is. You aren't intended to have access to all of it. What you have is meant to be unique to you

So this model benefits the playerbase as a whole (if you don't want to spend money you aren't locked away from anyone else) and it still means the developers get money for adding new content and supporting the game.

If you don't like this model you're gonna have a tough time playing multiplayer FPS games in the future. These games as a service models are sticking around.

You can make an argument that it appeals too much to gambling habits but it's addicting to players for a reason.
