Stuff like Valkyrie Profile execute it perfectly (as well as Persona to a lesser degree) because you don't have a constantly-ticking time bomb that's passing by just by standing still. You're allotted a certain amount of days to do whatever you like, and the time window is extremely generous, giving you freedom to mess around and explore.
