If I'm going to have a discussion with someone else, however, I need to know what their standards of proof and expectations are. I need to know what they believe before I can approach them about any inconsistencies in their reasoning. Or I could just shut myself off from other people and assume my conclusions are always correct without ever challenging them, and leave the extent of my discussions on the topic to activities like declaring absolute truths about the subject and making derogatory comments about people who disagree with me.
