I don't think it matters but probably safest bet is anywhere starting second "section" beyond (probably best to do a floor right next to a checkpoint so you can leave / save easier) If you run into him when he isn't in despair just run away and hope he doesnt OHKO you (Having Hifumi's max confidant perks helps a lot with this as you can auto escape...of course he might get first turn as well. I believe you can also change difficulty if you want) once you escape he will still be there (well you move a little bit and he will pop right back up where you encountered him).
