I remember that, it started with the wordfilter on 4chan which evolved into Duckrolling, which basically was trolling people with pictures on ducks on wheels.
The first Rickroll was when the GTA IV trailer had just been released. The video was down because everybody and their mother tried to watch it, so somebody posted links to backup trailers on youtube.
...which was Never Gonna Give You Up, of course. Then it took another year before it really exploded outside 4chan.
