Many people raise themselves above the morals they grew up learning or the population around them. Of course, far far far more people don't and that doesn't make them evil or heartless or something. But I can pretty confidently say that in a situation where slavery had always been a thing and I were in a situation where I could own one and it would be socially accepted, I still wouldn't have one.
