I mean, I'm pretty sure Pac-Man has a similar pedigree. What year did 1980 lose to again? Oh it didn't lose to any year because it literally wasn't in the contest? OK. 1981 had Ms Pac Man, which was the more popular sequel, and it immediately lost to 2006, which immediately lost to 2011. And Pac-Man is legit, in some ways arguably still the best game at what it does. (By comparison, my general opinion of Sonic is that it was a strong marketing campaign. Sega presented him as the "cool" version of Mario. And in 1992 that worked; people owned one console or the other, and would argue their games were better without even playing the other system's games. But in 2017, people can easily go back and play both Mario and Sonic, and say "huh, these Mario games are better.") --- Cats land on their feet. Toast lands peanut butter side down.
