The PS1/PS2/PS3 all had unique hardware configurations which made backwards compatibility extremely hard unless you flat out put a PS1/PS2/PS3 CPU in the machine. Clearly that was expensive. With the PS4 (and Microsoft with the Xbox One) they went with a more standardized hardware and should be easily made backwards compatible moving forward provided Sony doesn't go back to unique hardware again. --- This life is just a game we play, that we can never win.
