As I mentioned, the sun was setting on the semester. I had recently started my job in IT at my university, and as such, I needed a place to stay in town. I needed to continue working over the summer and make bookoo bucks. The answer didn't come immediately, but this is where A and J come back in.

During the back half of my freshman year I had joined the University Mariachi group with A and J as another way of bonding and jamming. Remember how I mentioned I played the violin? Well the group happened to need talented violinists and I was happy to play with A and J so I joined. That was another cool thing about J. He also played violin. We were similar in a lot of ways actually. Both really light skinned for having Hispanic families, both around the same build and height. We used to joke to people who didn't know us that we were brothers even.

One day, at the end of mariachi practice, I was hanging out with A and J like usual and A and I realized we both needed places to stay. It turned out he was good friends with a chick from Mariachi who happened to need to sublet for the summer, so he talked to her and we all agreed to terms and it was settled. Just like that, I'd be living my first summer away from home. The friend? We'll call her VV. She's not that important, but I lived with her over the summer, so she gets a name.

A, J and I had become really good friends by this point. I left this out before, but all through the V saga, A, J and I were still constantly jamming and smoking. And by this time we were smoking more than just cigarettes. We had this great spot we used to go to right next to a water tower not far from campus. J always drove us there in his car at night and we'd all smoke and generally have the most hilarious times. So many inside jokes were born out of those times. Too many to even remember by this point. We even brought some of our friends from the crew with S sometimes.

The summer started out on similar vibes to these. I had smoked before, but it was literally a handful of times in high school before I met A and J. So the first times I actually started feeling the effects were some of the best memories I have. I had never been so creative, funny and musical in my entire life. Suddenly I could bust a sweet flow to any beat on command, I could come up with lyrical melodies through whistling on the spot, I made the best puns constantly. And I could smoke like a champ.

We went to parties. We drank. We smoked. We jammed. Rinse and repeat.

J was living on a mutual friend's couch for the summer, but A and I still saw him all the time. 99% of the time I was with A though. Whenever J wasn't around, I was smoking and jamming with A and generally having a good time. We used to like to take long walks around town and bring the guitar and just hang out and sing. One of my favorite things about A and J was that none of us were embarrassed to sing around each other. And none of us had bad voices either! A was probably the most talented of us though. He had an impeccable ear and his tuning was great.

By now you're probably wondering: "What's so bad about this? Sounds like you were having a great time!"

And I was. For now. But as we all know, too much of anything can ruin it.. But more on that later.

One day I got home from work. A and J were both at the apartment already.

"Bro. Do you wanna do shrooms?" A said
"Like right now?! I mean..." I started
"Nah not now haha, But I know a guy." A said
"Dudes. I've ALWAYS wanted to" J said.
"No f****** way? Let's do it then" I said.

I had heard of shrooms. But I was honestly ignorant of the effects. I asked A and J a bit about it and they were more knowledgeable. A psychedelic. Huh. Interesting. What better time to experiment than during the summer with these great dudes? I started researching. And soon that day came. I'll divulge all on the next page.
