He wanted out of the war so he was trying to get a section 8 (psychiatric discharge). The cross-dressing was just one of many attempts in trying to get one. He actively refused a discharge because said discharge would've labeled him as a transvestite and a homosexual, which he balks against. And as the seasons go on, he eventually stops cross-dressing, especially --- "Krupp steel on Porsche Engines, who can defeat us?" "You kill me, you're better. I kill you, I'm better." ...
