I can read Hiragana and Katakana pretty well but you really need to know Kanji if you want to do anything useful like read a menu or a magazine or whatever. Also I usually don't know what the words I read mean lol. Desu is a verb of existence that pretty much just means "is" "am" or "are". "John desu" means "am John", which is perfectly grammatical in Japanese.
