So were the cops looking for some kids that had done something wrong and thought this bunch might be them? Or was this just a random act?

Either way, in 2017, when something like this happens and the media runs the story, they're leaving details out that make the cops look bad/racist. That's how they spark controversy, get views, and make money.

American cops don't need help to look bad/racist.

If they'd simply not hold children at gunpoint, not shoot people, not rob people, and not ruin people's lives over petty drug charges, nobody would consider cops bad or racist.

Except 99% of the time, cops are doing their job properly. But of course every day, effective police work doesn't make the news. So you don't see it. And it goes unappreciated.

But most people don't take a second to think about that. They just go on making generalizations like you have.
