Here's the best advice I can give you about online dating:

1) Don't take it too seriously since most people just use it for hook ups anyways.
2) On your profile just say you are just looking for dating but open to anything and would have a relationship with the right person
3) Mention a few of your interests but nothing that involves video games or comics or "nerd" stuff. Just say that you like going to concerts and coffee shops and trying beer samplers
4) When you message them follow this format: "Hey how's it going? My name's___________. [Insert a question or two about their profile here]. Have you been on here long?"

Just take what you can get. They get bombarded with messages on a daily basis and most of those girls are fucking crazy anyways so just see it as something to do for fun. When you stop caring about relationships, then that's when they will want to be your girlfriend.
