Someone explain this culture to a stranger on the surface it's just males outside of the show's intended age range that can appreciate a fun cartoon made by people who were responsible for fun cartoons from when we were in that age range. Pretty much this. We like MLP:FiM for the same reasons we liked older cartoons like Powerpuff Girls, or anime like Sailor Moon: they're legitimately good shows that have a wider appeal beyond their target audience. Shows like this accomplish that through having an enjoyable cast of characters, putting together fun stories that go beyond their kid-level rating, and throwing in humor and references that even the older audiences can enjoy.
