I have a Republican friend from Minnesota who I went to college with. He is a conservative Catholic who has always been Republican, but he also feels very strongly about equal rights and that Republicans need to take a stronger stand against racism. He tells me how much it bothers him that he used to like Minnesota Republicans because they were more like this than other Republicans, but recently he feels like the party is being railroaded by anti-Somali racists who are getting paranoid about them living in Minnesota even though they just mind their own business and have every right to live there. Since the early teens he says that it feels like things like small government, conservative values, and what he considers traditional Republican values have gone to the wayside in favor of anti-Somali paranoia.
