Look, I've seen this stuff firsthand at my hospital. Organs are in much higher demand than supply, so the plan is always to prioritize patients that provide the best option for longest life after transplant. Younger patients supersede older patients and those that don't smoke or drink or do drugs for various organs of need are higher than those that do.

With lungs, smoking of any kind is a major no-no due to the increased sensitivity and risk of infection or outright rejection that you're at post-transplant. The last thing any hospital wants is to waste a pair of lungs on someone that smokes anything regularly and keeps doing it after a transplant and potentially risks the organ.

That being said, that's usually something that's done for people while they are on a wait list, rather than before, and it sounds like the doctor went way overboard with the way they went after the kid, but I do get it.
