Not necessarily. If you can control the demand by lowering production, you can sell more for greater profit margins. And that's exactly what they're doing. They're making them rare so that more people want them allowing them to sell for a higher price.

They'll probably sell a lot more in the future eventually, and they'll be able to sell a whole lot more then than if they had just made as many as possible now.
