I mean it's not uncommon to try to boot people while they're on the airplane, I had that experience when we were all seated and then they announced they were overbooked and started giving incentives after incentives to try to sway people to give up their seats. They manage to get 6 people and everyone was happy. What United did here was went full stupid and stopped giving incentives after $800's (which isn't really 800 dollars but a fucking voucher) and started the whole "computer is going to pick people to boot off this airplane" shit. I mean I'll admit I myself would've been pissed if they "randomly" chose me and/or my wife as well.

However with that said, United isn't in the wrong or doing anything illegal, but just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. This kind of crap is PR disaster and United handle it very poorly.
