A good way to deal with automation sucking away low-skill jobs would be to restructure higher education and provide basic necessities to poor people at a certain income level studying for a pertinent degree. One of the bigger issues with "free college for all" is that this includes degrees that likely won't result in economic mobility. For example:

-A degree in a STEM field should be incentivized, a degree in Liberal Arts probably shouldn't be.

You can provide specialized government assistance in some cases instead of a basic income if the person in question gets a monetary lift to increasing their own mobility be entering a field that isn't at risk.

or we can just spend a trillion on the military, I guess
