Platonic friendships between men and women are entirely possible without ridiculous factors in play (like the guy being gay). It's just, when it's between two sexually compatible people, it's not something that all pairs like that are good at. Like it's so common to suck at it, it's backwards to treat it as extremely shame worthy when so many people have the same difficulty.

When both people are sexually compatible with each other, there's always going to be the possibility of sexual tension between them. That doesn't mean they're destined by the stars to bang if they keep hanging out. It's just a possibility. Friends who are fine with staying platonic are less likely to pursue that possibility. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem worthwhile enough for them to change things. That's the kind of dynamic that has to be in play for a man attracted to women and a woman attracted to men to remain platonic.

It's really not that uncommon to find a woman who just wants to be friends. However, a man attracted to women who feels the same way is not a unicorn either these days. He's real. And he comes in a variety of types. The "laid back passive guy who likes chicks, but not ambitious enough to chase them " is a classic example. He doesn't mind just being friends because he sees a full blown relationship as tiring and not worth the extra effort when he gets satisfactory enjoyment elsewhere. He might even be attractive looking, but he's too lazy to pick up dates. They're prime candidates as guy friends for women. And they can still end up with girlfriends, it's just more likely to happen when the girl is approaching.

Guys hungry for any female attention at all generally don't believe this guy exists. They can't understand how he could. Partly because the concept of his existence pisses them off. A guy into chicks gets a bunch of opportunities to ask a female friend out, but he's too apathetic to bother. It's like a huge middle finger to all the self-destructive losers crying over the friendzone...
