Trump (or someone in his inner circle) gifts two pages of a 12 year old tax return to an investigative reporter. This tax return is well before any expectations of impropriety would have occurred. Rachel Maddow, like all news anchors, is so desperate to get the "scoop" and be the first to reveal this earthshattering information, that she makes a big deal about revealing these tax documents. The documents, being innocuous, do nothing to really damage Trump. This accomplishes two things: one, it damages the credibility of the Russia allegations. Even though these particular tax returns were never going to show anything THAT damning, the fact that they're real and show nothing makes people who don't really care THAT much think "oh, these returns were nothing so they must all be nothing." Two, it gives Trump an out. Now if people demand his tax returns, he can claim "you'll find nothing, I already showed you those returns from 2005." --- Touch fuzzy. Get fuzzier. ...
